Josh’s favorite fiction: Barry Lopez and more
I work in Seller Services at Alibris, and here are three of my favorite books:
- Winter Count, by Barry Lopez: A rich and beautiful collection of short stories about human nature and the natural world. One of my favorite books of all time! If you like this, you will enjoy Arctic Dreams too.
- Crime and Punishment, by Fyodor Dostoyevsky: I hadn’t read any Russian literature before this one in high school, but it is still tops in my book and a novel that I have reread many times. There are so many interesting characters and intertwining plot strands; it can make your head spin.
- Martin Eden, by Jack London: A great semiautobiographical novel published in 1909 about the suffering artist as an aspiring writer trying to get published. The novel also gives you a very detailed look at the Bay Area at the turn of the twentieth century. It was first recommended to me by my then girlfriend, who is now my wife. And the novel made a huge impression on me as I was exploring the nooks of San Francisco and the East Bay when I first moved here. I am still searching for a nice copy of the first edition to add to my shelves.
