Portnoy isn’t complaining, and there’s no plot against this American author. Philip Roth has again proven his literary Superman status with Everyman, which won the 2007 PEN/Faulkner award for fiction this week. Easily one of the most praised and acknowledged authors of our day, Roth has written 27 books. And this latest of many career-spanning awards proves that he is clearly as capable as ever as he approaches his 75th birthday (March 19).

Would you, for instance, toss a lighted match onto a pool of gasoline inside your garage in order to see whether it’s still flammable? No? That’s ridiculous? A little crazy? You may be right, but that’s essentially what science fiction author David Eddings did last week, and the ensuing blaze destroyed his garage and office. Talk about the anti-fantasy of a fantasy author. The poor guy. You can read more about his unwise error, and then sit back and wait for the 2007 version of Esquire’s Dubious Achievement Awards (2006 awards here). We suspect that Mr. Eddings might make that list of unfortunate events.

Or you’re a book collector. Or a dignitary. Or maybe you’re someone with a lot of time on your hands. But most bookplate users basically boil down to folks who love to read and want to brand their beloved books as their own. It’s pretty simple, really—and interesting, too, when you get a look at the multitude of bookplates out there. An excellent place to gain an appreciation of the world of bookplates is a blog called Confessions of a Bookplate Junkie.

Lewis Jaffe is the “junkie” in question. When you browse his blog, you’ll discover a fascinating, virtual collection of bookplates—including those of Greta Garbo, Sigmund Freud, and Czar Nicolas II. Then there’s Walt Disney’s bookplate, and Noel Coward’s … and seemingly hundreds more belonging to the famous, the infamous, and the unknown. Take a look. But do so when you have some time to spare, because it’s easy to be drawn into this intriguing, unique book blog.

It is an expert account of the escalating fanaticism of the religious zealots that perpetrated the mass murders and destruction on that now-hallowed day. Over the weekend, I finally also brought myself to watch <a href="http://www.alibris.com/search/search.cfm?mtype=V&qtit=United%2093&cm_re=cite*na*na"">United 93, the chilling movie that distills September 11 into an unflinching and harrowing perspective: the view of the heroes aboard that flight who battled the terrorists on board and crashed their own aircraft into the Pennsylvania countryside rather than allowing it to be used to attack Washington, D.C. It is a captivating film, though almost unbearable as a reminder of the agony and tragedy of that day. These recent journeys back to September 11 remind me how deep within myself those events still resonate. I am not alone, and neither are you, in our uniquely individual emotional and psychological snapshots of September 11. That is the essential message of the Web site Watching the World Change: The Stories Behind the Images of 9/11.

An outcome of Watching the World Change, the book of the same name, this companion Web site was created by author David Friend as a way to accommodate the outpouring of reactions to a book focused on the powerful imagery and lasting impressions of September 11.

I’m finding that no matter where I go, the same thing happens whenever I mention the book, even in passing. Friends, colleagues, complete strangers—everyone stops what they’re doing and feels compelled to tell me their September 11 story. They can go on for about 20 minutes, without a break, reliving those moments again. And without exception, each tale is insightful and heart-wrenching in its own way.

Friend’s site is a detailed and in-depth study in how our global community continues to react to September 11. It is also a good example of how a single book can inspire and motivate its readers, fostering a Web site that has become a community of its own.

In the last several months, I’ve taken to exploring the blogosphere again, discovering new-to-me and uncharted book sites that are enjoyable, entertaining, and informative. The owners and authors of these sites enjoy books, and that joy is reflected in their writings. These sketches are simultaneously humorous, opinionated, biting, and articulate, and they encompass a wide range of subjects. The energy—just barely contained—fairly leaps from their words. What’s not to like? As a matter of disclosure, I have corresponded with one such author in this list, and have found the experience as delightful as reading the blog musings.

Here are some of my recent discoveries in the book-blogosphere, in no particular order:

Hugh’s Blog: Hugh Hollowell has recently started his blog and it is a momentous resource to book buyers and sellers. The information he provides in his site is lucid, comprehensive, and extensive. The content is worth reading and remembering, and the advice is practical. I always look forward to reading what he has posted because the information is useful.

Lux Mentis, Lux Orbis: Short and witty, these writings provide hints of information about the book world and links to exotic locations elsewhere in the Web world. Ian J. Kahn, the author and bookman, has an opinion for all seasons and the trip is enjoyable. It’s always a pleasure to see what he has found of interest.

PhiloBiblos: This blog covers “reviews of books old and new; news and commentary on book history, library culture, archives, and related subjects,” according to Jeremy Dibbell, who concisely and distinctively presents all aspects of books. He also tosses in the occasional literary review for added flavor.

Foggygates: Forrest Proper brings his distinctive writing sense to nearly everything, whether it is essays about trees or explaining a new book catalog.

Rare Book News: From around the world, book current events are presented with a brief quote from a linked newspaper article. Lee Jay Stoltzfus hosts this site and, in his own words and in large letters, describes himself as “Bookseller. Antiquarian. Occasional Geek.” The site is appealing and the information comprehensive. This one is for those who like reading news from newspapers.

Book Patrol: The information here is lively, interesting, and concisely presented. Paragraph bites and the occasional full commentary make for enticing reading. From art to booksellers, the topics are presented with refreshing candor and substance to ground opinions on various aspects of the book business.

I encourage you to check these blogs. The writing is among edgiest and sharpest I have encountered, and not entirely unexpected as these are individuals with book interests and book skills. Their wry musings and keen observations are a dynamic delight. Clean and crisp, they are a breath of bibliographic fresh air.

Maybe everything is bigger in Dublin too. After all, this award (which stems from that Irish capital’s city council) presents the world’s biggest book-oriented cash prize, welcomes author submissions written in any language, embraces literature from around the planet, and issues the longest longlist of potential prizewinners. It’s a big deal. Maybe it’s the biggest deal most book lovers haven’t heard of. I’ll admit I wasn’t aware of the IIMPACDLA until today. I’m a little embarrassed to have missed such an award (and such an acronym). Fortunately, embarrassment is easily overshadowed by awe once you get a look at that longlist.

Kazuo Ishiguro, E.L. (That’s not a typo: 138!) These authors are joined on the tip of this iceberg of a longlist by other notables like John Banville and Ali Smith (my recent favorite). But chip away the marquee authors and you’ll discover an intriguing list of names like Arnaldur Indridason, Abdulrazak Gurnah, and Zoran Zivkovic. For the ambitious reader, the IIMPACDLA longlist represents a recommended-reading list that is certain to take them to unexplored corners of the world.

In his “The Pop of King” column in the November 3 issue of Entertainment Weekly, author Stephen King has a lot to say about books that talk&#151audiobooks, I mean. The entire column can be boiled down to “audiobooks, while imperfect, are a good thing” (my words, not his). I agree. For book lovers, audiobooks allow for almost constant immersion in the book world. You can listen to them while you sit in traffic or stroll your local park—times when you shouldn’t exactly be staring into the printed page. But I like to get creative with them too. You can often find me tuned in to a book while I perform such random acts as flossing my teeth or folding my underwear. Have lots of housework? Let Ali Smith or Eoin Colfer tell you a story while you scrub the toilet!

While I think King’s latest book is pretty awful (including the audiobook version), I agree with this author of some of my favorite audiobooks (namely, his Dark Tower series) that listening to books (especially suspense novels) is a great way to experience literature. Whether you’re already sold on audiobooks or would like to give one a spin for the first time, you’ll find many enticing suggestions in King’s list of favorite audio titles:
